20 Sep Case Study: BHP BILLITON IRON ORE PTY LTD: ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT OF PILBARA IRON ORE OPERATIONS, Western Australia
THIS IS AN HISTORICAL PROJECT PROFILE
An environmental audit to collate a contaminated sites register was undertaken on behalf of BHP Billiton, in compliance with the Contaminated Sites Bill 2000.
Nine operational sites throughout the Pilbara were reviewed, including:
Yandi (Marillana Creek)
Ore Body 23/25
A review of existing site investigation data was undertaken and a list of potentially contaminated sites was compiled.
A walkover survey of each area was undertaken together with a preliminary sampling exercise involving surface or shallow subsurface soils. A contaminated
sites register was compiled including soil & groundwater analyses with comparison to applicable National Environmental Protection Measure (NEPC 1999) and ANZECC 2000
Report formatting was compatible with a GIS database for future development. An initial qualitative risk assessment was undertaken using the BHP Occupational Health and safety (OHS&E) guidelines.
Recommendations were made for an appropriate environmental management plan for each area.
