24 Jun Port Hedland Operations; Hydrogeological Review-Survey & Monitoring
BHP BILLITON IRON ORE PTY LTD
Hydrogeological review, Port Hedland Operations
THIS IS AN HISTORICAL PROJECT
A hydrogeological review was undertaken of the Nelson Point and Finucane Island iron ore processing sites at Port Hedland, in the Pilbara, Western Australia.
Previous investigation studies were reviewed, including the under-harbour tunnel construction project linking the two sites.
A walkover survey and monitoring exercise was undertaken in existing bores. This data was used to develop a conceptual hydrogeological model for both sites.
The relationship between groundwater, surface water and marine water flows in channels was examined.
The existing database was validated against laboratory data, and recommendations made for improvements in data gathering and storage procedures.
Recommendations were made for improvements to existing data and for further investigation to address data gaps.
